Crested Dogstail is found a growing widely across nearly all of the UK.  It grows from sea level up to about 600 m.  It is very common in old grasslands both on the Lowlands and on the Hills

It is found on a wide range of soils from acid to basic from light to heavy.

It is a low growing grass which is leafy at the base which makes it ideal for grazing by sheep.

Its yield is low but it withstands drought and cold and remains green over a winter
